Peter Doehle, a German shipowner, announced that it would be presenting a bottle of wine to every employee of Samsung Heavy Industries. The wine was produced at the shipowner’s own vineyard, and the surprising Christmas gift will amount to 28,800 bottles of wine.

The shipowner dispatched two 20-foot containers filled with wine from Valparaiso Port in Chile on November 1, and announced that it would pay all the related expenses, including duties and insurance fees.

Chairman Jochen Doehle of Peter Doehle said, “We sent wine to Samsung Heavy Industries to commemorate the first order placement of eight 12,600 TEU container ships, and to show that we hope to maintain our win-win partnership with the world’s best shipbuilder.

It has long been a custom in the shipbuilding industry for a shipowner to present bicycles or sunglasses to project team members upon completion of a shipbuilding project, or to provide an early delivery bonus in the event of early completion. Samsung Heavy Industries is the first company in which all employees have received a gift from a shipowner.

The wine is Calicanto, a typical Chilean red wine. Cabernet Sauvignon of France and Carmenere of Chile were mixed at a ratio of six to four, and aged for 13 months. The wine was produced at the vineyard and the winery that the shipowner directly operates.

2008 Calicanto, which has mostly been enjoyed in South America and Europe due to low production volumes, is sold for USD 20, and the total value of the gift reaches KRW 0.7 billion.

Each bottle was labeled “Specially Made to Mark our Partnership with Samsung Heavy Industries.” The gift is even more meaningful in the sense that the shipowner sent the wine first produced with grapes harvested in 2009 to Samsung Heavy Industries.

The wine is scheduled to arrive at Geoje Shipyard in early December, and Samsung Heavy Industries plans to distribute the wine before Christmas to encourage employees to celebrate the season with their families.

CEO Roh In-Sik said, “I extend my heartfelt gratitude for this invaluable gift from the shipowner. We will celebrate the year-end season with the wine, make premium ships and maintain our partnerships.”
