Product Information
Oil tankers are divided into crude oil tankers, product tankers which transport refined oil products, and shuttle tankers which transport crude oil produced from offshore production facility to facility on land such as FPSO.
In 1992, SHI built the first Aframax-class double-hull oil tanker and has been making continuous efforts to develop eco-friendly vessels ever since.
A shuttle tanker is a high value-added ship equipped with a sophisticated position control system that enables the ship to maintain its position offshore an oil production installation despite wind, waves, and currents.
In this field, SHI ranks first with the largest market share in the world by ordering 45 out of 115 shuttle tankers contracted worldwide.
Classification of shipsaccording to ship-size
In 2007, SHI built a 70,000-ton, bi-directional Arctic shuttle tanker, which was the first ever of its kind.
In 2014, the company successfully obtained orders for 6 additional ice-breaking oil tankers from European shipping companies. The tankers are designed to break ice measuring up to 1.4 meters thick at a speed of 3.5 knots and operate in extreme temperatures of up to -45 ¡ÆC.
Arctic shuttle tanker combining an ice-breaker with an oil tanker is highly recognized as a new type of ship that drastically improves transportation efficiency.
SHI constructed the world¡¯s first 6,200TEU container ship in 1999, at that time, 5,000TEU container ships were dominating the market.
Since then, the company has led the way in increasing the size of container ships by developing 8,100TEU (2002), 9,600TEU (2003), 13,300TEU (2006), and 16,000TEU (2007) container ships for the first time in the world.
In 2015, the company once again made headlines when it received orders for 4 units of 20,100TEU and 6 units of 21,100TEU container ships.
LNG carriers transport liquefied natural gas at a carriage temperature of -163 ¡ÆC.
In particularly, SHI built ¡®electric-powered LNG carrier¡¯with excellent operation capabilities and high fuel efficiency in 2001 and the world¡¯s largest 266,000§©-class LNG carrier in 2008-2009.
After 2013, SHI once again proved its technological prowess by designing and constructing ¡®eco-friendly and high fuel efficient LNG carriers¡¯ successfully.
The Company developed independent Korean-type cargo hold KC-S, SHI has been making a commitment to develop and apply KC-S in order to provide economic feasibility and peration capabilities to customers.
Moreover, SHI is driving innovation in LNG market.
Because it continues to focus on the development of innovative new ships such as ice-breaking LNG tankers for the Arctic route, LNG-FSRU (Liquefied Natural Gas Floating torage and Regasification Units) and LNG Bunkering for fuel supply ship.
Liquefied Natural Gas Floating Storage Regasification Unit
LNG FSRU which is capable of transporting, storing and regasifying LNG on board is the floating LNG import terminal that supplies gas through pipeline to consumer on land.
The demand of FSRU facility has been increasing with the growing demand of alternative energy in developing country such as South-East Asia.
In this regard, SHI is proactively leading FSRU market by developing new type of ships and various regasification systems.
Very Large Ethane Carrier
Cultivate new market with the world¡¯s first largest ethanol carriers.
Ethanol Carrier is a vessel which transports liquefied ethane extracted from natural gas such as shale gas.
SHI succeeded in opening up new market by ordering 870,000§©-class Ethanol Carrier in 2014 for the first time in the world.
Ethane Carriers with excellent operation capabilities and eco-friendly high-value will be increased with the development of shale gas. And it is expected to establish a successful bridgehead at Ethane transportation market.
Passenger ships can be broadly classified into ferries and cruisers.
Ferries are passenger ships traveling between ports, while cruisers are large passenger ships that can accommodate more than 1,000 passengers and offer residential, ecreation, fitness, leisure and restaurant facilities.
Cruisers are like offshore hotels.
Thus far, SHI has constructed three passenger ships weighing 28,000 tons for Minoan (Greece), and three 35,000-ton high-speed passenger ships for Norfolk (Netherlands).
It also won an order from Stena (Sweden) for two 31,000-ton passenger ships.
SHI is also leading green technology research by developing green passenger ships that reduce NOx and SO emissions by more than 90%, in 2009, by using LNG as fuel for the first time in Korea.
